Amazon details custom Alexa programs for hospitals and retirement communities
Amazon has announced two new programs for Alexa centered around healthcare and retirement homes. Through Alexa Smart Properties, hospitals and senior living communities can run their own custom version of the voice assistant. Retirement homes might tap into Alexa to help residents keep in contact with family and friends, stay in touch with staff, take part in activities and remain engaged with other members of the community. Staff members can use Alexa to broadcast announcements and, of course, the voice assistant can still be used for things like controlling connected devices and smart TVs. Amazon's aim with the healthcare program is to, among other things, let staff members check in with patients without having to enter their rooms. In turn, patients can ask nurses questions, and they'll be able to respond to brief queries without having to leave their station.
Amazon brings Alexa to hospitals and senior living centers โ TechCrunch
After already targeting verticals like hotels and apartment complexes, Amazon announced today it's now rolling out new solutions for healthcare providers and senior living centers. The solutions, which are a part of Alexa Smart Properties, are designed specifically to meet the needs of deploying Alexa devices at scale and will allow the facility's administrators to create customized experiences for their residents or patients. In senior living centers, the residents would be able to use Alexa devices to call their family members and other loved ones, as well as keep up with the goings-on at their community and other community news. The devices could also be used to make announcements, allow the residents to communicate with each other through direct audio messages, make voice and video calls, and they can streamline other center activities -- like check-ins, maintenance requests, and various administrative tasks. Amazon believes this could help make facilities more efficient and productive.
Alexa Together turns your loved one's Echo into an emergency support device
Last year, Amazon announced Alexa Care Hub, a free service that uses Alexa to let people check in on family members. The so-called "caregiver" can see notifications and alerts when someone uses Alexa as a way of letting you know that someone they want to keep an eye on is up and about. It also lets the "care receiver" say "Alexa, call for help" and it'll contact the caregiver immediately. Amazon didn't charge for this, but today it's adding a new feature called Alexa Together to the service. It'll be a $20/month service that gives an aging family member 24/7 access to Urgent Response, which Amazon describes as a professional emergency help line. Alexa Together will also make caregiving easier to share among multiple family members by letting multiple people be designated as support contacts for a single individual.

I tried a smart coffee maker--and it transformed my mornings
One of the best things about Amazon Alexa is that she can make life easier by helping you prepare for the day ahead. She read you the forecast, remind you of upcoming meetings, and much more. Now she can brew you a pot of coffee before you ever leave the bed. Like many people, coffee is essential for making my mornings run smoothly. While living in quarantine with my two young kids, I'm always looking for ways to automate my morning and make life less hectic, like letting Alexa brew me up a pot of the good stuff.
After five years of Amazon's Alexa, why isn't it better?
Five years ago today, Amazon surprised the tech press by unveiling Alexa and the Echo, its first smart speaker. "Well this one came out of nowhere," was the reaction of Verge reporter Chris Welch. Five years later, Alexa is a household name -- literally. If you have children and an Alexa device, they probably know how to ask the robot to play their favorite songs at breakfast. You might have Alexa in your kitchen, on your bedside table, or even in your car. But half a decade after Alexa launched, there's a lingering question: has Amazon's assistant actually become more useful?
